There is something incredibly special about photographing a surprise proposal. The excitement, the anticipation, and the genuine emotion that unfolds in just a few moments create memories that will last a lifetime. Robert's surprise proposal to Sydney at Omni Bedford Springs Resort was one of those moments I'll never forget.

Several weeks before the proposal, Robert reached out to me after being referred by the concierge team at Omni Bedford Springs Resort. He was planning a weekend getaway with Sydney and wanted to create the perfect surprise proposal. Together, we talked through different ideas and ultimately decided that the gazebo overlooking one of the natural springs would be the perfect location.

The Omni team helped transform the gazebo into an incredibly romantic setting by decorating it with beautiful ivy and candles, making it feel intimate while still blending naturally with the resort's beautiful surroundings.

Of course, planning the proposal was only half the challenge—we also had to make sure Sydney wouldn't suspect a photographer was waiting nearby.

That's where my family came in.

To keep everything a surprise, we used them as decoys while I pretended to photograph them near the bridge. As Robert and Sydney approached, Sydney politely commented that she didn't want to interrupt our session. I smiled and assured them they were perfectly fine to continue walking toward the gazebo.

Sydney was completely surprised.

Her expression instantly shifted from confusion to pure excitement as Robert got down on one knee. Every emotion—from the initial shock to the joyful tears and laughter—unfolded naturally, creating moments that simply can't be recreated. Watching those genuine reactions is one of the reasons I love photographing proposals so much.

One of my favorite little moments actually happened before the proposal even took place. Earlier that day, someone had asked Sydney if she was a bride while she was walking through the resort wearing her beautiful white summer dress with delicate floral details. Smiling, she replied, "No, I'm not."

Less than ten minutes later...

She was a fiancée.

It's one of those little details that made the entire story even sweeter.

After celebrating the proposal, we explored some of Omni Bedford Springs Resort's most beautiful locations for a mini engagement session. We visited the wedding grotto with its peaceful waterfall, photographed beneath the large shade tree and swing, and wandered through the beautiful grounds while the excitement of the proposal was still fresh.

The joy between Robert and Sydney was impossible to miss. They spent the entire session smiling, laughing, and soaking in every moment before heading off to celebrate their engagement over dinner together.

Helping Robert plan this proposal from the very beginning and then capturing the moment it all came together was truly an honor. Seeing the months of planning pay off in a few unforgettable seconds is something I'll never get tired of witnessing.
